Abstract

Cytomegalovirus mononucleosis is associated with fever, negative heterophil antibody,
atypical lymphocytosis, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and abnormal liver function test.
Recently, in situ hybridization has become a useful technique for rapid detection of viral
nucleic acids in formal in- fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue.
We experienced a case of cytomegalovirus mononucleosis in a 2-year-old female who
complained of high fever, cough and dyspnea. In situ hybridization of bone marrow
biopsy using biotinylated RNA probe to cytomegalovirus revealed positive result.
