Abstract

Transfusional iron overload in adult patients with acquired anemias may result in
wide spread organ dysfunction. If clinical symptoms of iron overload is present in
multiple transfused patients, secondary hemochromatosis should be confirmed by liver
biopsy. However, because percutaneous live biopsy is contraindicated in special
conditions such as major coagulopathy and massive ascites, transjugular liver biopsy is
a safe alternative technique for obtaining adequate liver tissue.
Recently, we experienced a case of hemochromatosis due to multiple blood
transfusions in MDS patient, confirmed by laboratory data, bone marrow study and
transjugular liver biopsy Literature was reviewed briefly.

Keywords Myelodysplastic syndrome, Secondary hemochromatosis, Transjugular liver biopsy
