Essential thrombocythemia is a myeloproliferative disorder, characterized by marked thrombocytosis and marrow megakaryocytic hyperplasia. Although the major causes of morbidity and mortality are bleeding and thromboembolic events, the long-term prognosis is favorable and leukemic transformation is rare.
We report a case of acute leukemia following treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-negative essential thrombocythemia with hydroxyurea for 4 years with a brief review of literature.
