Background: Soluble IL-2 receptor(sIL-2R) are released from activated human lymphoid cells in vitro, and markedly elevated levels of serum interleukin-2 receptor have recently been reported in patients with hematologic malignancies and autoimmune disorders. Previous reports have clarified a wide range of IL-2 recpetor expression in a
variety of non-T-cell hematopoietic neoplasm such as common acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) and acute myelocytic leukemia(AML). In this study, we measure sIL-2R levels in acute leukemia and investigate the relationship between the levels of sIL-2R and clinical outcomes.
Methods: Soluble IL-2R was measured in 22 adults with acute leukemia using sandwich enzyme immuncassay available as the CELLFREE interleukin-2 Receptor Test Kit. Serial monitoring of soluble IL-2R could be possible in 18 cases.
Results: Serum levels of sIL-2R were significantly increased in patients with AML(mean, 1,507U/ml), and in patients with ALL(mean, 1,696U/ml) with respect to
controls(mean, 222U/ml; p<0.01). The levels of sIL-2R seemed to be related to the status of disease, decreased upon complete remission, and increased in relapsed cases.
Also there seemed to be negative correlation between serum IL-2R level evaluated on complete remission and complete remission duration in cases with ALL.
Conclusion: We conclude that the determination of level of soluble IL-2R in patients with acute leukemia might be regarded as an additional useful tool for monitoring
leukemic status. Understanding the biologic significance of soluble IL-2R in acute leukemia will be required.
